The Delhi government argues that the city’s men cannot hold their drink and that is why it is unsafe to allow women bartenders in pubs and restaurants.
I guess, according to the government, there must be something in the water in Delhi that causes men to not hold their drinks as well compared to men from other cities in India, who hold their alcohol well, most times. Of course, the government had to make a case, and they played the trump card -
The government cited several examples, including the killing of the model Jessica Lal, in 1999.

By the way, I love this random exaggerated fact slipped in there by the captioner for this picture on the BBC article.
Back to the topic, the reasoning behind bringing up the Jessica Lal case being that every guy who consumes alcohol could potentially go around shooting women bartenders. I guess one way to counter ridiculous logic would be with more ridiculous logic. It’s time for my monthly Hitler comparision.
Hitler was a teetotaller and yet he killed millions. We cannot afford that kind of carnage in Delhi. I say every guy needs to get drunk and stay drunk.
“The men in this city are as good or bad as men anywhere else in the world. There are female bartenders everywhere in the world so the government’s argument does not seem justified,” said social commentator Kamna Prasad.
I had a few beers the other day with this guy from Delhi and as far as I know he did not molest or shoot any female bartenders. Maybe he is the exception to the rule or maybe I should’ve plied him with tequila shots and carnage would’ve ensued.
Lifestyle commentator Suhel Seth held similar views.
“I think it is silly - this is a government which can’t basically enforce law and order and wants to create gender division by saying that Delhi men can’t hold their drinks. It defeats logic and intelligence,” she said.
That’s a novel concept. The government trying to pass nanny state laws so they don’t have to do their job. Why does this sound familiar?
All I’m saying is don’t bet your money on a Hooters ishtyle sports bar in Delhi anytime in the next couple ………. centuries.

This is unfortunately typical of the governments knee jerk reactions which end up victimizing the same women that they claim to be “protecting”.When several incidents of rapes of bar -girls who danced in bars came to light in Maharashtra a few years ago, the government banned dance bars instead of stepping up to improve the law and order situation. In one fell swoop they destroyed the livelihoods of these women!
Runa,
I remember that bar girl controversy in Maharashtra. Instead of punishing the offenders the government ends up punishing the victims in the name of protecting them.
Does any state have female bartenders in India? I am trying to think and I can’t remember any of the places I have been to.
Karthik,
Mumbai had them back in the 90s when I was doing my Engineering there. Don’t ask how I know
