While the world is eagerly awaiting Raj’s entry (1,2) into Riverdale, we received smoke signals from a reader V about the gang and their trip to India, as missionaries.
Fret not, our source also pointed us to a blog which explains how this all came about.
These particular comics, …
,are the result of long-time Archie artist Al Hartley teaming up with Christian comic company Spire Comics.
And Archie and the gang take a trip around the world and Kashmir is one of the destinations, where the Indians are wooed by Western music. One guy wants to know if he could exchange Ethel for four cows.
Not my cup of tea, but for Archie fans and desis everywhere, we have the pages from the comic after the jump.

That strip is beyond dumb.
So what was the title for that particular series? “When Archie turned evangelical”?
I’ve seen some pretty gross stereotyping of foreign folks in Archie comics. For instance, the Indian exchange students were always Hindus with turbans a.l.a Hadji in Johny Quest. Heck, I remember reading a strip where the Indian students (turbaned Hindu) came to school on a bicycle with a seat made or pointed spikes. I guess it sort of reflects the stereotype many Americans carry to this day.
These Christian comics were produced in the 1970’s. And as I remember them they were pretty good though I am sure that many wouldn’t like the Christian message that they contain.
But I do remember them and for what they were meant to be I found them to be well-written for the time.

And what stereotype is that? A people that are so spiritually strong and focused they can ignore pain? Is that such a bad stereotype? It is the same stereotype that other Asians have such as the whole “Grasshopper” spiritual warrior thing you see that comes from shows such as “Kung Fu”.
Intellectually smart and spiritually strong and in tunned. Damn those stereotypes.
Cmon Kirk. You seriously believe 99+% of the population is even thinking that option??
Besides, irrespective of whether you spin it that that way, that stereotype is just plain wrong and inaccurate because people dont ride, sit, sleep or levitate on a bed of nails. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find anyone, even in India, who has seen/experienced this stuff.
Pray educate me on that because I, sure as hell, have no such stereotype of “Asian” people.
