Narain’s career killer?
Photo from emligh
I have received a few emails from friends and family questioning the non coverage of recent Narain Karthikeyan news.
Over the past few months, I have followed every piece of Narain Karthikeyan news, his possible second season in A1GP, involvement in the Speedcar series and his progress at Williams.
Given the nature of F1 and racing in general, most of this news is speculation and hype. For the news hungry media in India who are always looking representation in the world stage, any piece of information is magnified and then the world media picks it up as legitimate news.
The current situation is slightly different.
Spyker has confirmed that they are talking with Narain about filling the seat vacated by Christijan Albers. But the deal is that Spyker is in talks with at least 4 other drivers.
We would all like to see an Indian representing at the pinnacle of Motor Sport, but here are 5 reasons why Narain might be better off waiting.
1) Spyker is Jordan / Midland renamed. His personal relationship was never that good with the management. They seem to have treated him badly and now Albers, this could happen again.
2) Williams are not very happy with Wurz. He has been improving the past few races, but has not managed to match the pace of his young team mate Nico Rosberg. Narain might (very big might) find himself a seat at Williams, which is a way better team.
3) Spyker is the only back marker team. Super Aguri, who started last year have managed to score points, Spyker is yet to. Narain will essentially be racing with his team mate and no one else.
4) Super Aguri and for that matter a few other middle of the pack teams will be looking for drivers shortly and Narain might not be able to do any magic in a Spyker, which might essentially kill his career.
5) Narain did very well in the A1GP, to which he could return. This not just pays, but also puts him in the news. Just like entertainment stars, any news is good news for an Ex F1 driver. This will also increase his media presence in India and he should be able to get more backers as far as sponsorship goes.
What reasons can you guys think of?

How tragic. A country of a billion people that cannot produce one worthy F1 driver!
Of course, there are humdreds of sports mediocrities but not world class sports figure.
In contrast, Hamilton a mixed-race British chap in his 20s is doing fabulously well and has attracted worldwide attention. So what’s it with the Indian temeperament?
Eddie: I think it is more than that. We cannot really compare Lewis with Narain, because Narain never had and for that matter no Indian growing up in India will have the same kind of opportunities as someone growing up in Europe.
Having said that India still get’s its ass whooped in cricket, so…
Didn’t Spyker just get a new chassis design guy - someone with laurels? Or was it STR (Scuderia Toro Rosso)?
Yeah - overall I agree, if Spyker will continue to be the back markers, he should give it a pass and try to support/test drive for one for the bigger marques, or stick to A1GP.
Ashoe: Yes, Spyker now has Mike Gascoyne, the guy Toyota decided to let go. But for him to redesign the chasis, it is going to take at least until next season.
