Shyamalan“I see FOBbie people” - Shyamalan

This post brings back fond memories. The story is set sometime in August 1999. The dot-com bubble was at it peak and a lean fresh faced engineering graduate in his early 20s from Mumbai, India - translation big time FOB - had descended on the shores of the mighty US and A for “educational purposes”.

While they were waiting for graduate school to start, a bunch of FOBs decided to do what FOBs do best, hang out like lukkas and watch movies. Crammed into 2 or 3 cabs the 20 dudes departed for the mall. People in the mall could not help but observe these young men bunched together speaking rapidly in a different tongue. The mall was a culture shock for the dudes - skimpily dressed “phoren” women and expensive stores, especially when you convert dollars to rupees.

So, unable to buy purchase much for themselves they decided to go catch some movies in the theaters attached to the mall. Wow! 20 theaters in a single complex! Amrika was truly great! The first movie was a funny but brainless comedy starring Martin Lawrence. The movie got out at a relatively early timing of 10:30pm. Being the party animals that they are, they snuck into a relatively empty theater that was showing a movie starring Die-Hard star Bruce Willis - The Sixth Sense. To top it off the movie was made by a desi!!!

After sitting spellbound through the movie, whose ending rates among the top 10 plot twists in Hollywood history, one dude went back to the college computer labs, pulled up his hotmail account (these were pre-GMail days), added every single person from his address book and email them the plot twist!! The email spread like a virus for a while this guy got hate emails from people he did not even know!!!

The movie went on to become a big Hollywood blockbuster the world over featuring one of the best plot twists in cinema history. But for some people the experience of watching this wonderful movie was ruined forever. Talk about playing spoiler. Sorry, M. Night Shyalamalan.

Yeah! I was hit by that email too. So it was your gang, eh? Frankly at that time, the email didn’t make sense to me coz I hadn’t heard of the movie. I thought it was one of those M Jacko is an alien, Bruce Willis is a ghost kinda thing.
