An Air India Express (The low cost subsidiary of AI) and an Indonesian Garuda 747 were forced to turn around when India test fired its nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-III.

Initial news reports suggested that the ATC’s in the region were advised about the test well in advance, but a little digging in google leads me to think that the memo was probably lost.

Ari Sapari from Indonesia was quoted as saying [Via Sepia Mutiny news thanks KXB]

“We were not given any advance warning about this missile test,” he said. “This was obviously confusing and worrying. It also caused us to disrupt an international flight schedule — a great financial expense.”

Responding to the allegation, the Indian government spokesman Navtej Sarna said

A notice was sent a week before the test, Aviation officials were told “about the launch window date, danger time, zone and height and had been advised to issue notice to aviators and mariners.

I would buy this story, if not for another article published in the NewIndiaPress.com website.

An Air India Express flight bound for Chennai via this city was forced to return to Singapore in view of the testing of Agni III missile.

The flight, scheduled to land at 11.05 am, was on its way here when defense officials advised the pilot to take a diversion for safety reasons in view of the Agni test.

When an airliner of your own country did not get the message something went way wrong and does the government think that the people cannot put two separate news items together and figure out who screwed up?

Nice, so we created surface to air missiles with nuke warheads, which is what would’ve likely happened if the missiles hit one of those airplanes.

A surface to air missile (SAM) is fired at an airplane. No nukes needed for that one. If this missile, which is surface to surface, hit one of those airplanes it would’ve become a SAM with nukes. Bad joke when you have to explain yourself.
