Narain Karthikeyan signs up to race in the Speedcar series

F1, A1GP, 24 hours of LeMans and now Narain Karthikeyan joins big name drivers like Jean Alesi, Stefan Johansson, Gianni Morbidelli and Johnny Herbert in the new Speedcar championship starting in November this year.

Speedcar championship is a newly formed series that pits 24 identical cars using a 600bhp engine. From the initial looks of it, it’s the Middle Eastern / Asian Nascar series that will probably end up using well known European car brands as sponsors.

Narain had this to say about his new challenge

I am very much looking forward to being a part of the new Speedcar Series, it is obviously very competitive, with great names such as Jean Alesi and Johnny Herbert, and it will be very exciting to pit myself against these legends of Formula One.

The winter series is perfect for me as I can concentrate on Formula One, my main obligation, but also be a part of a really serious racing series that keeps me competitive and racing, my only ambition.

There has been some discussion about the series and it’s similarity on some forums.

The initial shakedown test was conducted earlier this month at the Virginia International Raceway. The Speedcar website, which understandably lacks a lot of information had this to say about the initial test.

The test was being used by drivers and engineers to perform the initial shakedown runs on three of the new 600bhp cars, not to search for ultimate lap times.

As most of my regular readers know, I am not a big fan of stock car racing, well at least not in the ovals. This could in a way be Narain’s stepping stone into Nascar, if he choses to do so.
