A few footnotes I picked up from Bob Woolmer’s obituary on BBC.
- He was born in post-Independence India in Kanpur. That’s right he was eligible for a PIO card.
- He played test cricket for England as an all-rounder batsman. His career went downhill after his participation in the ill-fated Packer Series.
- He spearheaded the return of the South African cricket team to world prominence. His innovative use of technology in analyzing and planning matches earned him the moniker of “Laptop Coach”.
- He was in the running for being coach of the English team before taking up his last and final assignment as coach of the Pakistan cricket team.
- The Pakistan team was mired in controversy and infighting and things came to a head with their ignominious exit from the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
- Following their exit he was found unconscious in his hotel room and died shortly thereafter. His untimely death shocked the cricketing world and is currently under investigation.
