Abhishekwarya a.k.a TMBWITW (to some folks at least) is in the news again. This time she had a PIL slapped on her for marrying trees.

Aishwarya is a Manglik (astrologically Mars-bearing), which is believed to have negative consequences for her impending marriage. The actress is said to have married a peepal tree at Benaras, a banana tree at a Bangalore temple and a god’s idol in Ayodhya.

The astrology playbook

Astrology always fascinated me growing up. My taatha (grandfather) on the maternal side, was a widely respected astrologer. My mother picked up some of his knowledge and still continues to dabble in astrology. I was awestruck at the sway him or any other astrologer held over matrimonial alliances. The yeas or nays of an astrologer mean a world of difference to a matrimonial match and there are occasions where weddings are called off because of a dosha (fault) – not the same as dosa - (dosha link via Sacred Cows) in one parties’ horoscope.

Mangal dosha is a commonly found dosha. This dosha is also called Kuja dosha or Bhauma dosha. This dosha occurs when the placement of Mars in the horoscope is in certain houses that cause malefic influences. People, in whose natal chart Mars is placed inauspiciously, are called Mangliks.

So, if you are one of them Manglik people, when it comes to marriages, you maybe better off going the non-arranged marriage route, unless of, course your would-be is also “one of ‘em Mangliks”.

People of both sexes can be Manglik. If a boy having Mangal dosha is married to a girl having Mangal dosha then the malefic affects are nullified leading to prosperity and a happy married life.

The reason Mangliks are meted out this unfair treatment is because of a popular superstition that if you marry “one of ‘em Mangliks”, you will die. Never mind the fact that 42% of the population could be Mangliks.

The most famous myth about being a Manglik is that if he/she is married to a non-Manglik then the spouse is bound to die. This does not happen to everybody. Such predicament is only true for horoscopes, which have a severely afflicted Mars. A good astrologer can do this determination. Approximately 42% of the population are supposed to be of Mangliks.

Since people don’t want to die and tend of play it safe, Mangliks essentially, are for the most part “untouchables” and that is not in the Chicago mobsters’ context. That is exactly what, Shruti Singh, the lawyer who filed the PIL contends.

“I filed a PIL to stop such practices as reportedly conducted by actor Amitabh Bachchan for his future daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai. It is in violation of Article 17 of the Constitution, which prohibits untouchability. It also violates fundamental human rights,” said Shruti.

I’m normally against government interference in people’s personal lives and frivolous law suits. But this is a case of a private citizen working on purging archaic social taboos and no better way to do that in a, superstitious and celebrity crazed nation like India, than to make examples of high profile figures who promulgate this, for lack of a better word, crap. I’m not so sure taatha, if he were alive today, would be proud of my stance.

I want to hear more about your Taatha. Did you have your chart matched up with your partners?

Taatha was awesome. He actually shot a tiger that was terrorizing him and his workers on a building project in the mountains in the 1930’s. It was skinned and hung in his living room, bullet holes in its neck and everything. Everyone feared him but I think it was more out of respect. He passed away in 1991 at the ripe old age of 94.
No charts were matched for me. Since I married out-of-caste, out-of-religion and out-of-country, I would’ve suffered the same fate as the tiger :-)

Your Taatha and my Papa sound similar.
I bet he told great stories. I hope you’ll share some of them.

Checking the “Mangal-dosha” (or, “Kuja-dosha”) in a birth-chart is perhaps one of the most misunderstood area while measuring the marital compatibility. One astrologer may find a chart having severe “Mangal-dosha” while another astrologer may declare the same chart clear of any “Mangal-dosha”. A lay man, having no knowledge of Vedic astrology, finds himself in a dilemma - as to whom he should believe.

Late Dr. B.V. Raman, world-renowned astrologer, author of more than 100 books on Vedic astrology and former editor of the famous “Astrological Magazine”, presented an unique formula to measure the exact intensity of “Mangal-dosha”, on a scale of 100 points for each of the concerned malefic planets causing the dosha, in his books “Jaatak-Nirnay” and “How to judge a horoscope (vol. II)”. Through this formula, maximum “Mangal-dosha” in a chart may reach up to 337.50 points.

Though, some of the astrologers (specially in Northern India) do not consider 2nd house while checking for “Mangal-dosha”, but learned Dr. B.V. Raman and many other Jyotish scholars has strongly advocated to consider the 2nd house too. While, the 2nd house represents family and wealth on the one hand, it is also the “Marak-bhava” of self on the other hand. Through the principle of “BhaavatBhavam”, it is also the 8th from 7th house and thus represents the age of the spouse. If Mars is posited in the 2nd house, it aspects the “Saubhaagya sthaan” or “Mangalya sthaan” of the wife through it’s 7th aspect. Through it’s 4th aspect, it afflicts the 5th house (house of progeny) and through it’s 8th aspect, it afflicts the 9th, the most important house representing the destiny and “Dharma” of a person.

Note: Theoretically, The “Mangali-dosha” (or, “Kuja-dosha”), should not only be measured in Rasi-chart (Lagna kundli) but also in Moon-chart and Venus chart too. But, in practice, it becomes too complicated to adopt these calculations. The Rasi-chart has got the maximum importance in all matters and thus most of the astrologers considers Rasi chart only.

Thanks for the explanation, Shyam. If I understand correctly what you’re saying is, depending on the astrologer, someone who is not a Manglik could be labelled one “accidentally” and vice versa.

hey all, thanks for the explaination and breakdown. not surprisingly, the whole manglik thing has made my impending marriage…difficult. my partner is supposedly ‘manglik’ and i am not, and the pandit that my parents went to has stirred up alot of trouble for us. so if you could direct me to some sites, or simply provide us with more information about debunking this stuff, it would mean alot! its not for us but for our respective parents. faith in this stuff can be scary!!

    Mangochyck,
Sorry to hear about your predicament. Shyam seems to be well versed in this stuff, which is far more than what I can claim.
You can probably contact him from his website.

[...] UberDesi Tip (free of charge - desi ishtyle): Do not look at the moon during a solar eclipse or you shall incur bad luck. Maybe marrying a tree will fix it. Lord Ganesh and the moon - Once, Ganesha accidentally tripped and fell, breaking one of his tusks in the process (this is also said to be one of the reasons for Ganesha’s half or missing tusk). Chandradev (Moon God) saw this and laughed. Ganesha, being the short-tempered one, cursed Chandradev that anyone who happens to see the moon will incur bad luck. Hearing this, Chandradev realised his folly and asked for forgiveness from Ganesha. Ganesha relented and since a curse cannot be revoked, only softened, Ganesha softened his curse such that anyone who looks at the moon during a Surya-grahan (solar eclipse) would incur bad-luck. Thus was born the notion of not looking at the moon during a solar eclipse in India.
