Dhoni - sporting icon or spoilt brat?

This is so typical, the category “It happens only in India” fits it perfectly. I’m sure it happens in other countries but in India you hear stories of this kind of crap growing up, its shown in movies and now it happened in real life.

Dashing Indian batsman and cricket star,Mahendra Singh Dhoni was stopped for a traffic violation and asked to be let off but the cop actually followed through and fined him. Kudos to the man for performing his duty.

Asking to be let off, Dhoni pleaded that he needed to be shielded from public glare because of his popularity. That’s true, because had Dhoni stepped out of his SUV onto the Ranchi thoroughfare he would have been mobbed the way he was when he had ambled into a local saloon for a haircut in November. Police had to intervene to disperse his fans.

But on Tuesday morning, Ahmed having regained his composure, pointed out that the Ranchi administration had banned dark film on windows and windscreens in December. When Dhoni tried again to explain that he used tinted glasses due to security concerns, Ahmed reached out to shake hands with the wicketkeeper, but firmly said, “Sir, you will have to pay the mandatory fine of Rs 900.”

Realising the cop wouldn’t budge, Dhoni paid up and chose to slip out before he attracted a large crowd at the busy intersection.

Of course, he paid the consequences and was transferred. He performed his duty and enforced the law. His bad.

Traffic sub-inspector Saifuddin, who has been transferred to Bahu Bazar from Albter Ekka police station, had enforced the fine on Tuesday. Although the wicketkeeper pleaded that he had special permission to use tinted glass keeping in mind his security needs, the officer did not relent.

This is a classic quote from a public official, the Chief Minister no less.

“Dhoni enjoys a special status. He is known internationally. He faces security threat and he should not be treated like a common man,” Chief Minister Madhu Koda, said.

Somehow I’m going to find it hard to root for this piece of crap to succeed.
