Narain Karthikeyan, India’s only F1 driver was recently confirmed as the test driver for Williams Toyota for 2007 and continue his duties with the English team. Given that Formula1 has passed a law removing the third driver from Friday practice, it was assumed that Narain will be the backup driver in case Alex Wurz or Nico Rosberg should not be able to drive for whatever reason.
But Autosport.com recently reported that Williams Toyota is still looking for a reserve driver besides Narain.
Williams said that the team were considering their options about what to do in the event that Nico Rosberg or Alexander Wurz were unable to race.
“We are thinking about that presently,” said Williams.
It is possible that the team could reach an agreement with future engine supplier Toyota to have someone from their young driver development programme.
